Yeovil Town secured their first win of the season after a dominant display over Gateshead, ending in a 3-0 win at Huish Park.

Stephen Walker got the scoring started inside two minutes to give Yeovil the lead, before a late brace from Luke McCormick rounded off the scoring in Somerset.

First Half

Billy Rowley made two changes to the starting 11 against Carlisle United, as Joy Mukena came in for the suspended Joe Gubbins, and Charlie Lennon made his Yeovil Town debut as Mason Obeng dropped to the bench.

It was an electric start at Huish Park, which saw Stephen Walker grab his second goal in as many games, after Archie Davies pulled the ball back towards Walker, who’s shot rifled past the Gateshead keeper giving Yeovil an early lead.

Minutes later Yeovil came forward in search for a second with Charlie Lennon, who drove down the left-hand side before picking out Ryan Jones, but his effort was comfortable for Peter Jameson in the Gateshead goal.

The chances kept coming for Yeovil, this time through goalscorer Walker who found himself in the Gateshead box and set the ball off to Luke McCormick, but he was denied at a tight angle by the hands of Jameson.

The first chance for the visitors came in the 23rd minute, when Michael Spellman’s cross found the head of Luke Supyk, but his header was tame, landing in the hands of Jos Barker.

Normal business was quickly resumed as a deep cross for McCormick was brought down expertly by Jones but again Jameson was equal to the shot keeping the score at 1-0.

The Glovers kept pushing for the second goal of the afternoon, but this time were denied by the frame of the goal. A brilliant run from Lennon saw his cross find Jones, but his effort rattled the bar.

With the half drawing to a close, the pressure from Yeovil didn’t let up as Davies drove into the box, however his effort was once again saved by Jameson.

Second Half

Gateshead made two substitutes at the break with both David Eguaibor and Fenton John entering the field of play.

However, the two substitutes did not change the flow of the game, as more running from Lennon saw him with space in the box, however his cut back was cleared by Gateshead and out for a Yeovil corner.

The resulting corner saw more chances go a begging for the Glovers. The first chance saw a back-heel attempt from Walker blocked by Gateshead; the ball then dropped kindly for McCormick, but Jameson denied him with a brilliant save. It was then Ben Radcliffe’s chance to give Yeovil an elusive second goal, but he blasted his effort over the crossbar.

Both managers looked to their bench on the hour mark, with Billy Chadwick and Josh Anifowose coming on for the visitors, and Mason Obeng replacing debutant Lennon for the hosts.

A mistake from Gateshead saw Walker pick the ball up and drive towards goal, but he ran himself into danger after choosing to go alone instead of slipping in McCormick.

Walker would later leave the field after being replaced by Slavi Spasov 65 minutes in.

It was then substitute Spasov who brought the ball forward through midfield and put Luke McCormick in on goal; he calmly slotted it past Jameson into the far corner giving Yeovil a deserved two goal lead.

With only minutes left of normal time, Luke McCormick pressed David Ferguson, who subsequently stumbled on the ball which allowed the Yeovil skipper to fire home his second of the afternoon and Yeovil’s third.

The Glovers first three points of the season see them unbeaten after their opening three games, which is the first time since 2012/13 that Yeovil have achieved this feat – we all know how that season ended…
