Yeovil Town struck twice late on to overturn a one-goal deficit against Barrow, picking up their second consecutive win.

Keaton Ward opened the scoring for hosts after a well struck volley beat Jos Barker, but a late penalty was converted by Luke McCormick, before Joe Gubbins headed home his first goal in a Yeovil shirt late on to win the game.

First Half

Billy Rowley named an unchanged eleven from the side which beat Gateshead 3-0 last time out; the suspended Joe Gubbins came back into the squad, however started the game on the bench.

Barrow were the better of the two teams to open proceedings, after a nice passage of play the home side found themselves in the box, but Luke McCormick made a brilliant challenge, and Barrow had the first corner of the game.

The resulting corner found Kennedy Digie free at the back post; his header was well saved by Jos Barker, then a scramble on the goal line resulted in a penalty shout for the home side, but the referee waved play on.

With just over ten minutes gone, Barrow continued to push for the opener, this time through Rekeem Harper who fired a shot just outside the box, but Barker was equal to the effort.

The Glovers’ first chance came through Ryan Jones, who cut inside from the right and looked for the bottom corner; however, his shot went wide of the post.

The first booking also fell to Ryan Jones after a late challenge saw the number 10 in the book, the following free-kick was launched into the Yeovil area, but thankfully the referee gave a foul in the favour of Yeovil.

Barker was called into action once again as Alex Reid was fed the ball and struck a fierce effort towards goal, but it was a comfortable save for the Yeovil keeper.

Another corner from Barrow fell kindly to George Walker in the box whose effort was deflected over the bar; the following corner was comfortably claimed by Barker.

With the half drawing to a close, Yeovil had a rare adventure forward, as Jones knocked the ball into McCormick’s’ path, but he was unable to get his shot away as Digie made a late recovery tackle.

Second Half

Yeovil made a triple change at half-time, with Joe Gubbins, Mason Obeng and James Daly entering the field of play to replace Joy Mukena, Charlie Lennon and Ryan Jones respectively. And it was Yeovil who had the first chance of the half after Archie Davies won a corner, but the Glovers’ first corner of the evening was claimed comfortably by the Barrow ‘keeper.

The Glovers continued to grow into the second half as McCormick picked out Daly, whose header was well blocked by the body of Danny Amos, denying Yeovil an opener.

It was then Barrow’s turn to come forward, as substitute Ben Whitfield cross found fellow substitute Innes Cameron, but Cameron was unable to get his shot off after being put under pressure from the Yeovil defence.

A bursting run from Davies down the right saw Yeovil break forward; he then found Daly in the box whose shot was blocked, but the ball then fell kindly to Zain Westbrooke who blazed his effort well over the bar.

With 15 minutes left of normal time, Barker punched a corner away, but the ball then fell to debutant Keaton Ward, whose volley rattled the inside of the bar and bounced over the line, giving Barrow a 1-0 lead.

Yeovil looked to respond quickly as Daly and Obeng combined well, playing a clever one-two which saw Daly’s low-drilled effort gathered easily by Ben Winterbottom.

Ward almost grabbed a second in quick succession after Paul Kalambayi found Ward free in the box, but his effort was struck straight at Barker.

With five minutes to play, Yeovil came forward through Jordan Norville-Williams who put a ball in the box, but Slavi Spasov was brought down in the box and won a penalty for the Glovers.

Luke McCormick stepped up and sent the ‘keeper the wrong away, grabbing his third goal of the season and putting the Glovers level late on.

Minutes later, and the Glovers had their winner!Johl Powell picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park and was subsequently brought down.

The following free-kick was floated in brilliantly by Brett McGavin and met the head of Joe Gubbins whose effort looped over the ‘keeper and into the back of the net, giving Yeovil a 2-1 lead in stoppage time.

A late chance to level the game came for Barrow, as Xavier Benjamin’s effort was somehow tipped over the bar by Jos Barker, denying more late heartbreak for the Glovers.

The Glovers secured a late comeback victory and picked up their first three points on the road, ending the game in 6th in the National League and one of only three teams still yet to lose.
