Yeovil Town picked up their second win of the Bank Holiday weekend, after holding onto a 3-2 win over Tamworth at Huish Park.

Luke McCormick got the scoring started after 15 minutes, before Jake Hutchinson levelled the score during the first half. Two second-half deflections gave Yeovil a two-goal lead thanks to Mason Obeng and Ryan Jones. A quick reply from Kieren Donnelly meant it was a nervy finish for the Glovers in Somerset.

First Half

Billy Rowley made seven changes for Yeovil’s second game of the Bank Holiday weekend with only Jos Barker, Joy Mukena, Luke McCormick and Brett McGavin remaining from Friday’s dramatic win.

The first chance of the game fell the way of Yeovil; after some nice play down the left-hand side, the ball found James Daly in the box who played it back to Hayden Muller. He then set Brett McGavin, whose long-range strike was tipped over by Rhys Lovett.

Another chance for the Glovers came through Johl Powell, who received the ball from McGavin inside the box but fired over from a tight angle.

A loose pass from Yeovil allowed a quick transition from Tamworth, Kieren Donnelly charged down on goal, but his effort was easily saved by Jos Barker at the near post.

With just over 15 minutes on the clock, the deadlock was finally broken. It was a lovely move from Yeovil after Slavi Spasov slipped McGavin in behind the Tamworth backline, who then cut it back to Luke McCormick, who knocked it past Lovett, grabbing his fourth goal of the season and the first of the afternoon.

It was nearly two in quick succession as McCormick was again put through, but he was denied by the body of the Tamworth keeper.

Tom McGlinchey had a blocked effort which went out for a corner to the visitors; the resulting corner was played quickly to Morgan Roberts, who found the net, but the offside flag denied him an equaliser.

30 minutes played at Huish Park, and Tamworth came forward down their left-hand side with McGlinchey, who found Jake Hutchinson free at the back post, and Hutchinson made no mistake from close range, levelling the score at 1-1.

Tamworth once again came forward, this time down the right side with Donnelly, who drove into the box and forced Barker into another save at his near post. The subsequent corner was headed just wide by Jordan Cullinane-Liburd.

On the stroke of half-time, Hutchinson found himself in the Yeovil box and laid the ball back to Roberts, whose effort struck the side netting of the Yeovil goal.

Second Half

The start of the second half was even, with both sides enjoying spells of possession, but the away side had the first opportunity to cause problems for Yeovil, after a wide free-kick was whipped in; however, it avoided everyone and went out for a goal kick to Yeovil.

Yeovil had their first attack of the half as Mason Obeng received the ball from McGavin and drove into the box before shaping a shot towards the far corner, which took a deflection off the Tamworth defender and ended up in the back of the net, putting Yeovil 2-1 up early in the second half.

Just after the Glovers’ second goal, Rowley was the first coach to turn to his bench, with Ryan Jones and Ben Radcliffe entering the pitch, and James Daly and Loick Ayina leaving the field.

A ball looking for McCormick was intercepted by a Tamworth defender. Despite huge shouts of handball, the referee waved play on and the away side broke forward with Donnelly, who ran into the box before his shot was denied brilliantly by the legs of Barker.

In search of a third goal of the afternoon, substitute Ryan Jones came forward with the ball, weaving past Tamworth defenders into the box, before firing a shot which took another deflection and beat Lovett in the Tamworth goal, giving Yeovil a 3-1 lead!

However, the two-goal lead would not last long for Yeovil, as a ball across the face of the goal found Kieren Donnelly unmarked at the back post, who poked the ball into an empty net, halving the deficit almost immediately.

Tamworth made their first changes of the afternoon with around 15 minutes to play, with Olly Dyson, Thomas Bramble and Hutchinson making way for Teo Kurtaran, Ben Milnes and Ben Acquaye.

It was then substitute Acquaye who picked the ball up deep in the Yeovil half and put a low ball into the box, and it found Donnelly, who got a shot off quickly, but Barker got down well to deny a leveller.

Yeovil then came forward looking to restore their two-goal lead as the ball was put into the path of McGavin, who fired an effort towards goal which went agonisingly wide of the post.

With five minutes left to play, Tamworth came forward through Acquaye again, who fired an effort towards goal, which took a deflection and went out for a corner. The following corner caused a goalmouth scramble which somehow ended in the hands of Barker.

The ball was sent forward into the Yeovil box, and a mistimed jump from Barker allowed Hayden Hollis to put the ball into an empty net, but after a lengthy delay the officials ruled the goal out for offside, keeping the score at 3-2 with seven minutes of stoppage time left to play.

In the last minute of stoppage time, McCormick broke forward one-on-one with Lovett, who subsequently brought down the Yeovil number eight, giving the Glovers a late penalty.

McCormick stepped up but rifled his effort off the post, but the final whistle was shortly blown after, giving Yeovil a deserved win!

Yeovil’s third consecutive win means they finish August unbeaten for the first time since the 1993/94 season.
