Yeovil Town blew Solihull Moors away under the lights at Huish Park, running out as comprehensive 4-1 winners. Goals from Ryan Jones, Slavi Spasov and a Johl Powell brace secured the three points on a magical night at Huish Park.

First Half

The big news before kickoff was the inclusion of Yeovil Town academy star Liam Nardiello, as he took his place on the bench, as well as a first start of the season for Jack Kingdon. Luke McCormick’s absence was believed to be due to a knock, while Stephen Walker continued to miss time due to flu.

Zain Westbrooke took kickoff for the Glovers, as they kicked towards the Wollens stand for the first half. Both sides looked to make their way towards goal, but Yeovil had the first chance of the game, as a looping cross found the head of the offside Slavi Spasov.

Solihull looked to respond seven minutes in, as a well weighted pass from Tyrell Warren found Jacob Wakeling; he got his shot past Jos Barker, but it bounced just wide of the post.

Yeovil’s high press proved effective during the first half, as they forced the visitors into a mistake, some great one-touch passing released Archie Davies on the right, but his first-time effort sailed over the bar.

15 minutes in, and the Glovers had the lead! A poor goal kick from Nathaniel Ford was cut out by the home midfield, with the ball coming to Ryan Jones. The dynamic number 10 worked his way to the box, dropped a shoulder and rifled home for his 2nd of the season.

Around the half hour mark, James Daly’s influence on the game grew, with one storming run almost resulting in a goal, before pouncing on a poor touch from Warren soon after, crossing for Spasov but the former Southend man couldn’t get his head on the end of it.

Solihull grew into the game following the Yeovil goal, doing a good job at keeping the Glovers penned inside their half, Jacob Wakeling tried to make himself a nuisance but the backline stood firm.

Yeovil finished the half strong, before the half-time whistle blew.

Second Half

The visitors came flying out of the blocks in the second half, putting Yeovil under pressure but created nothing significant, with the game becoming very bitty as a result.

None of this mattered though, as 57 minutes in, it was 2-0 to Yeovil! McGavin found Daly on the left hand side, who put a dangerous ball into the box. It was blocked by Jevon Mills, as the Thatchers appealed for handball, but the appeals became cheers as Slavi Spasov slid in to poke home the loose ball from a yard.

Shortly after Solihull made their first sub, Yeovil had another effort, as Brett McGavin fired over from outside the box, and they kept the pressure on too, as Westbrooke saw two efforts saved from either side of the box, linking up immaculately with McGavin.

More chances came and went for the Greens, as they were in full flow with their attacking, fluid style, before play came to a halt to allow Solihull’s ‘keeper to receive treatment for a head injury. Following a lengthy delay, and a lot of tape, Ford was ready to continue.

Solihull Moors gave themselves a fighting chance late on, as a corner looped in towards Jos Barker from the right, slipping out of his hands and in – Matty Carson was credited with the goal, moments after being booked.

90 seconds later, and Yeovil had their two goal lead restored, as Johl Powell buried a lovely curling effort past Ford for his first goal in green and white, restoring the feel-good atmosphere among the Thatchers terrace.

The end of the game was frantic, with Hayden Muller being booked, before Jordan Norville-Williams ran almost the entire length of Huish Park, firing a shot on goal but Ford was equal to it. Mason Obeng was also introduced late on, as the referee indicated eight additional minutes.

Glimpses of the Walton & Hersham connection was seen late on too, with Obeng’s searing pace and Powell’s intelligent positioning causing mayhem for the Solihull defence. Moments after I wrote this, they scored!

Obeng came down the left, laying it off for Powell, who looked up to find Charlie Lennon. His shot stung the palms of Ford, who could only parry into the path of Johl Powell, grabbing his second, and Yeovil’s fourth of the night!
