Yeovil Town massacred Boston United on an overcast Saturday afternoon, scoring six goals in a single league game for the first time since beating Torquay United in 2019!
A 17 minute onslaught before half-time from the Glovers put the game out of reach for Boston, as goals from Ryan Jones, Brett McGavin, James Daly and Johl Powell meant Yeovil raced into a substantial lead before the first half was over.
Into the second half, Yeovil continued with their foot down on the gas, putting five and six past the Pilgrims in quick succession via Mason Obeng and a Johl Powell penalty. Boston couldn’t get a foothold on the game at any point across the 90 minutes, as the Glovers blew them away.
First Half
Yeovil were unchanged from Tuesday’s draw against Worthing, with the only amendment to the squad being the return of Loick Ayina to the bench. It was announced before kickoff that Yeovil had signed a new forward too, as Owen Dean was introduced to Huish Park.
Boston took the kickoff for the first half, as Yeovil kicked towards the Wollens Stand for the first half, with the first chance of the game falling for the Glovers in less than a minute. Johl Powell was released down the left hand side and worked his way to the box, firing a shot that stung the palms of Boston ‘keeper Louis Chadwick.
Yeovil withstood some early pressure from the visitors via a succession of corners, but eventually settled and grew into the game, piecing together some nice moves on either wing, none testing the opposition’s ‘keeper though.
17 minutes in, and Slavi Spasov has the best chance of the game thus far, as a perfectly placed cross by Ryan Jones found the head of the number 19. His header was destined for the top right corner until the left palm of Chadwick palmed it over in acrobatic fashion.
The Glovers continued to push, as Spasov fired a shot on goal, put behind once again by Chadwick, following great work on the right by Archie Davies.
Boston had their first proper chance of the game just before the half hour mark, as a free-kick was lofted into the box, and the clearance header from Brett McGavin fell to Agyemang on the edge of the box. He let leash on a daisy cutter, but Jos Barker was equal to it, before the rebound was flagged for offside.
Yeovil took the lead just before the 35-minute mark thanks to a gorgeous counter-attacking move, with Hayden Muller releasing Ryan Jones down the right hand side. He left Georgie Gent in a heap on the floor, before bursting past two Boston bodies in the box, and driving low past Chadwick to give the Glovers a deserved lead.
Four minutes later and it was 2-0! Yeovil came down the right once again, as Davies found Spasov. He cut back past his man and laid the ball at the edge of the box for Brett McGavin – he chopped past a Boston defender and drove the ball low into the net for his first of the season!
Thankfully, the fans had five minutes to catch their breath before the next one, as the third rifled into the net 42 minutes in. Ryan Jones was the scorer of the first, and he had created the third, as his low ball across the box landed nicely at the feet of James Daly. He fired low past Chadwick to extend Yeovil’s lead further.
The Green and Whites found time for one more before the half-time whistle, as Johl Powell was released through the middle by Jordan Norville-Williams, and he calmly slotted past Chadwick for the fourth of the game, and his fourth of the season!
Half-Time: Yeovil Town 4-0 Boston United
Second Half
Before the second half got underway, the visitors made a double substitution, looking to shake things up following the late barrage of goals they faced.
The first chance of the game came to Yeovil once again, as James Daly almost pounced on a poor touch by Sachdev, the Boston defence recovered in time to make Daly’s life difficult enough to poke wide for a goal kick.
More good work came down Yeovil’s right side, as Jones and Davies linked up once again, but the number 10 dragged his shot wide. James Daly earned himself a spot in the referee’s book not long after for a heavy challenge on Sachdev.
Right on the hour mark, Rowley made a triple substitution; James Daly, Ryan Jones and Brett McGavin all made way for Charlie Lennon, Zain Westbrooke and Mason Obeng respectively.
It was two substitutions that linked up for goal number five, with Mason Obeng starting and ending the move. The referee played advantage for a shirt pull on the number 7, before he found Walker. The number 9 then danced into the box, laid it off for an on-running Obeng to lay the ball comfortably into the net.
Moments later, and it was a penalty! Johl Powell was dragged down in the box, and he slotted his penalty past Chadwick for goal number six!
The remaining 15 minutes was much of a muchness, with no real chances for either side apart from a a corner or two for the visitors, before the referee blew his whistle for the final time, bringing down the curtain on Rowley and Simpson’s latest masterpiece.
The win for Yeovil keeps them firmly in the National League playoff hunt, sitting 4th on 22 points, and extending their unbeaten run to five games.
The Glovers are back on the road next Saturday, as they head to London to face Wealdstone. You can join George Marshall-James and Sam Chinn live on Green and White Radio from 2:55pm.
