Aaron Gardiner has taken a look into the career of Owen Dean for us, to give us an idea of what to look forward to from our new number 18!

At just 22 years old, Owen Dean has earned his chance to step into full-time football as Billy Rowley and Yeovil Town moved to secure the striker’s signature. Dean arrives at Huish Park after playing a key role in Farnham’s rapid rise through the non-league pyramid, scoring 91 goals for the club.

Dean’s journey to Huish Park has been a unique one, having spent virtually his entire senior career with Farnham Town. He made his first team debut in 2021, and he quickly developed into one of the key players in the club’s rise through the leagues. It didn’t take long for Dean’s goalscoring record to begin as he netted four goals in 13 appearances in his maiden campaign. The following season, Dean came into his own as he scored 14 goals in 41 appearances and became a key figure in Farnham’s side.

From there, Dean’s scoring record continued to improve despite finding himself in tougher divisions. In the 2023/24 season, he reached the 20-goal mark for the first time, as he grabbed 22 goals in 49 appearances, as the club secured promotion after an unbeaten campaign. The previous two seasons also saw the striker hit 20 plus goals and saw Farnham climb into the National League South. In total, Owen Dean leaves Farnham having made 214 appearances and registered 133 goal contributions.

But what can Yeovil supporters expect from their new man? Dean has an impressive goalscoring record but will offer much more than just goals to this Yeovil side.

A football player in a maroon tracksuit walks onto the field, accompanied by a young boy in a matching outfit. They are greeted by a crowd of spectators in the background.

His movement is one of his biggest strengths, with the striker regularly looking to get into the wide areas and making runs off the shoulders of defenders. His ability to find space could give Yeovil another way of creating chances, particularly when opponents sit deeper and look to limit space around the box. With a Yeovil side that looks to play at a high tempo, move the ball forward quickly and exploit spaces it seems Dean will slot in seamlessly.

As well as this, his ability to play at speed with the ball also fits into that approach. Yeovil have shown willingness to run at teams and get the ball into dangerous areas, while Rowley has also asked for energy and pressing from his forwards. Dean’s intensity and willingness to press could therefore allow him to contribute even when Yeovil are without the ball.

Even with Dean’s impressive scoring ability, his record at Farnham also shows his ability to create chances as he racked up 42 assists in his 214 games. As seen this season, both Spasov and Walker enjoy dropping deep and linking play up, Dean’s ability to create chances for others will be a key asset for Yeovil especially with likes of Jones and Daly running beyond him, giving the Glovers another avenue to create chances.

The obvious question now is how quickly Dean can adapt to full-time football and the step up to the National League. He has continued to impress and develop at every level he’s played at, but Yeovil represents a different challenge. There may be an adjustment period, but his style appears well suited to what Rowley is trying to build at Huish Park.
